The Highland Region for Malt whiskies is by far the largest by area stretching all the way from Perthshire to Sutherland and has around 28 stills in operation today. Generally Highland Malts are more robust than their conterparts in Speyside, with much more use of European oak for maturation and slightly heavier spirit. Highlanders are not adverse to putting up the peating levels a tad too.
