  • Lagg Inaugural Release 2022 Batch 3 Ex-Rioja Red Wine Charred Cask. 50ppm. 50% 70cl

Lagg Inaugural Release 2022 Batch 1 Ex-Bourbon Cask is 100% matured in Bourbon Barrels for 36 months and was produced using Concerto barley and water from the distillery borehole.  They used peat from North East Scotland and the peating level is 50PPM.  It is non chill filtered with no additional colouring and is bottled at 50% abv.  This Batch was a limited release of 10,000 bottles worldwide.

Batch 1 Tasting Notes from Lagg:

Nose: Medium intensity. A hit of earthy peat with slight medicinal note in the background there too. A sweetness; caramels, vanilla tablet. Alongside the peat there is also a slight herbaceous note there too.

Palate: Very mouthfilling, quite thick texture. The sweetness on the nose is sill there, but more butterscotch and malted biscuit. Vanilla tablet notes and there is also now a minerality to it.

Finish: Medium-Long and very full. Nice warming peat that lingers but a bit more of that medicinal note is prominent.

Comment: With water, a burst of the sweetness on the nose and then less of the vanilla but more mineral and herby notes. After some time much more of that rock pool-y bit salinity is present. Sweet, with earthy peat but that interesting minerality and herby element in the background.

Lagg Inaugural Release 2022 Batch 2 Ex-Oloroso Sherry Cask is matured in Bourbon Barrels for 30 months and finished in 55 litre Ex-Oloroso Sherry Casks for 6 months. It was produced using Concerto barley and water from the distillery borehole.  They used peat from North East Scotland and the peating level is 50PPM.  It is non chill filtered with no additional colouring and is bottled at 50% abv.  This Batch was a limited release of 10,000 bottles worldwide.

Batch 2 Tasting Notes from Lagg:

Nose: Medium intensity. Earthy peat smoke. Lots of sweetness and nuttiness coming through. Cocoa, some fruitcake. A real earthy note.

Palate: Creamy and thick. Big hit of the peat. Certainly, doesn’t feel its ABV! Some chewy toffees and red fruits.

Finish: Medium-Long. More peat, classic bonfires. Oaked tannins and a hint of sweetness. Touches of salted caramel and caramelised sugars.

Comment: With water, initially a big hit of hazelnut milk chocolate on the nose which then develops into sticky, chewy caramel notes on the palate and then as it opens up more salt in the finish and a lovely, salted caramel lingers. Water really helps to open this one up with those sticky sweet notes. Earthy Peat, a bit of oak and lots of rich caramel and treacle-y sweet.

Lagg Inaugural Release 2022 Batch 3 Ex-Rioja Red Wine Charred Cask is matured in Bourbon Barrels for 30 months and transferred into 50 litre Ex-Rioja Red Wine charred casks for 6 months. It was produced using Concerto barley and water from the distillery borehole.  They used peat from North East Scotland and the peating level is 50PPM.  It is non chill filtered with no additional colouring and is bottled at 50% abv.  This Batch was a limited release of 10,000 bottles worldwide.

Batch 3 Tasting Notes from Lagg:

Nose: Light intensity. Earthy peat with some light minerality and a hint of oak.

Palate: Thick, mouth coating. More of the peat comes through on the mouthfeel. There is a sweetness. Lots of berries maybe some dark fruit. Some more herbaceous notes in the background.

Finish: Medium. More peat, nice balance with a little pinch of saltiness.

Comment: Water brings out a little more of the minerality. Earthy peat with dark fruits and berries, hints of herbs and some slight salinity.
