This 1971 classic speyside whisky is presented with the original wooden box from this very old Speyside Distillery.
Glen Moray started life in 1828 as West Brewery in Elgin, which was run by Robert Thorne & Sons before being converted to a distillery in 1897. By 1910 the Distillery was left to ruin and then closed.
Life at the Distillery returned in 1923 when the near derelict building was purchased by Macdonald & Muir,
In 1958 the Distillery had a massive reconstruction. Stills were doubled to four and a Saladin Malting box was installed. This bottling was distilled in 1971, whilst the Saladin Malting box was still in use at the Distillery. Then in 1978 the maltings at the Distillery was decommissioned. In 2008 the Distillery was sold to the current owners La Martiniquaise.
The Saladin Mating box was invented by a Frenchman, Colonel Charles Saladin to reduce the strenuous manual labor involved in traditional floor malting. This was fitted into the Glen Moray Distillery in 1958 and then removed in 1978. The Saladin box was generally replaced by the more up-to-date drum malting technology.
