Port Ellen Distillery was originally established in 1825 and eventually fell silent in 1983, a period when many distilleries fell on hard times.
This single malt was casked for maturation in 1978 just a few years before falling silent in 1983.
Diageo owned this cask and when they identified a new demand for Single Malt Whisky from silent Distilleries they introduced 17 annual editions called the Port Ellen Distillery Special Annual Release.
The very First Release was bottled in 2001 followed by this Sixth Release in 2006.
Each release was limited and individually numbered.
Diageo released a total of 17 Special Releases and after this announced their intention to re-build the Port Ellen Distillery which was completed in March 2024.
We have this Sixth Special Release to be sold on behalf of a private owner who purchased this bottle at the time of release. The private owner has kept this bottle for 18 years before asking us to sell this on his behalf.
