For 250 years, Tomintoul village has stood proudly among the heather clad hills of Speyside, where generations have faced Highland winters, celebrated community life and been involved in Scotch Whisky.
This 250th Anniversary Release from the Whisky Castle in Tomintoul honours the founders, the estate workers, the farmers, the craftsmen, the distillers and families who have all shaped the village since 1776.
Every glass is a tribute to their legacy and to the timeless character of Tomintoul, a place where history, community and exceptional Single Malt continues to flourish.
Pre 1775 - the area of Tomintoul was where the Whisky Smugglers lived.
1775 - when the 4th Duke of Gordon from this estate conceived, planned and laid out the village.
1776 - Tomintoul was established, this is the date used by Aberdeen Historic Environment Record.
A copy of the 1776 map is contained in each tube with the bottle.
The Duke's aim was to reduce the smuggling on this land, however the evidence shows this did not work.
1780 - Thought to be when the first tennants occupied the new village.
1823 - To deal with the smuggling on this land, the 5th Duke of Gordon from this estate went to Westminster and The Excise Act was then introduced, paving the way for licenced distilleries to be built.
1904 - The Whisky Castle shop was established, although it is thought a shop was here long before this date.
1965- The establishment of the Tomintoul Distillery.
