You have the chance to own these four very special bottlings from the original Port Ellen Distillery on Islay.

Port Ellen Distillery was originally established in 1825 and eventually fell silent in 1983, a period when many distilleries fell on hard times. 

Before the Distillery closed these four bottles of single malt were casked for maturation in 1978 and 1979 just a few years before falling silent.

Diageo owned these casks and when they identified a demand for Single Malt Whisky from silent Distilleries they introduced the Port Ellen Distillery Diageo Special Releases in 2001. 

The very First Release was bottled in 2001 followed by the Second Release in 2002, the Third 2003 and the Fourth in 2004. Each release was limited and individually numbered. 

Diageo release a total of 17 Special Releases and after this announced their intention to re-build the Port Ellen Distillery which was completed in March 2024. 

We have the First, Second, Third and Fourth Special Releases to be sold as a set on behalf of a private owner who purchased each bottle at the time of release. The private owner has kept these bottles for 20 years before asking us to sell these on his behalf.

The Port Ellen First Annual Release - Distilled in 1979 and bottled at natural cask strength of 56.2%. Aged 22 years old, bottle number 3575 of just 6000 Limited Edition bottles. 

The Port Ellen Second Annual Release - Distilled in 1978 and bottled at natural cask strength of 59.35%. Aged 24 years old, bottle number 3575 of just 12,000 Limited Edition bottles. 

Note: the bottle number of the First Edition is the same as the Second Edition. 

The Port Ellen Third Annual Release - Distilled in 1979 and bottled at natural cask strength of 57.3%. Aged 24 years old, bottle number 5525 of just 9,000 Limited Edition bottles. 

The Port Ellen Fourth Annual Release - Distilled in 1978 and bottled at natural cask strength of 56.2%. Aged 25 years old, bottle number 1584 of just 5,100 Limited Edition bottles.
